Harmandir Sahib stands in the middle of a tank of water, open on four sides to anyone who comes. The langar beside it feeds tens of thousands of people a day, free, without asking who they are.
The Golden Temple is at its best before dawn and late at night, and both need you to be close.
The palki sahib ceremony carries the Guru Granth Sahib in around four in the morning and out again late at night, and the complex is at its quietest and most extraordinary at those hours. A hotel a ten-minute walk away means you can go twice in a day without arranging transport. Amritsar's old city around the temple is congested and slow to drive through, so proximity is worth more here than hotel category. There is also free accommodation for pilgrims in the sarais attached to the complex — basic, and offered to anyone.

October to March. Avoid the summer, which is severe.
November to February gives comfortable days and cold nights, and the complex is at its most pleasant. October and March are warm and workable. April to June regularly exceeds 42°C, with marble underfoot that becomes unwalkable by mid-morning. The monsoon in July and August brings humidity and rain. Gurpurab festivals, particularly Guru Nanak's birthday in November, fill the city — extraordinary to witness, and accommodation is scarce.
