Fourteen nights changes the character of the trip

It stops being an itinerary and starts being a stay.

With six nights in Madinah you can attend prayers at Masjid an-Nabawi without watching the clock, and visit Quba on a Monday as is customary. Eight in Makkah means repeated tawaf, time at the Haram outside the busiest hours, and the option of performing Umrah more than once. It suits people travelling a long way, older pilgrims who need a slower pace, and anyone going during Ramadan who wants the last ten nights.

The itinerary

14 nights, Madinah first, with the Haramain train between the cities.

Masjid an-Nabawi during the day1

Madinah

6 nights

Most itineraries begin here. Calmer than Makkah, and a gentler start after the flight.

  • Prayers at Masjid an-Nabawi
  • Rawdah visit on a Nusuk timed permit — we show you how to book it
  • Ziyarat: Quba, Uhud, Masjid al-Qiblatain
  • Rest before entering ihram

Where you stay: Hotel distance to Masjid an-Nabawi stated in metres on your quote.

Getting there: About 6h 30m direct to Madinah (MED). Airport is close to the Haram.

Pilgrims at the Masjid al-Haram2

Makkah

8 nights

Ihram is entered at the miqat on the way. The rites themselves are performed here.

  • Tawaf, then sa'i between Safa and Marwa
  • Halq or taqsir to complete the Umrah
  • Prayers at the Haram, and repeat tawaf as you wish
  • Optional ziyarat: Jabal al-Nour, Mina, Arafat

Where you stay: Distance to Masjid al-Haram stated in metres — the main variable in the price.

Getting there: Haramain high-speed train from Madinah, about 2h 30m.

What it costs

Guide prices per person, two sharing, outside school holidays. The hotel standard is the biggest single variable.

StandardWhat that meansGuide price pp
3-starComfortable hotels, typically 500–800m from each Haram, shuttle available£949
4-starUnder 300m from both Harams, walking distance to every prayer£1,399
5-starClosest available, often within or adjoining the Haram complex£2,199

The tier here is almost entirely about walking distance. A 3-star at 700m and a 5-star at 100m are the same flights, the same visa and the same train — what changes is the walk to five daily prayers, which matters most for elderly pilgrims and young children. We state the metres on every quote so you're choosing, not guessing.

For comparison, UK agents currently advertise 3-star Umrah from around £550–£1,200 per person, 4-star around £1,200–£1,650, and 5-star from about £1,650 up to £2,500. The very low figures usually mean quad-sharing and a shuttle from 1km-plus out. Ours are guide prices for twin-sharing at the distances stated.

When to go

Any month except the days of Hajj. Ramadan costs far more.

October to March is the most comfortable and the best value. Ramadan — especially the last ten nights — is the most sought-after time of the year and priced accordingly, with hotels near the Haram booking out many months ahead. Summer in Makkah regularly exceeds 45°C, which is demanding during tawaf and sa'i and worth weighing carefully for elderly pilgrims.

Questions people ask

Why Madinah first?

It's calmer, it's a gentler start after the flight, and you enter ihram at the miqat on the way to Makkah. Some itineraries reverse it — tell us if you'd prefer that.

How close will the hotels be?

We state it in metres on the quote for both cities, and whether it's walking or a shuttle. That figure is the main thing separating the tiers.

Is the Haramain train included?

Yes, in all tiers. It's about two and a half hours and considerably more comfortable than the coach.

What vaccinations do we need?

A meningitis ACWY certificate is required for entry. Arrange it with your GP or a travel clinic well before you travel.
