An hour south of Cancún, and the difference is that Playa is a town rather than a strip. Fifth Avenue runs parallel to the sand, and you can walk to dinner instead of ordering a taxi.
That single fact is why people choose Playa over Cancún, and why half board often beats all-inclusive.
Quinta Avenida — Fifth Avenue — runs for about twenty blocks a street back from the beach, pedestrianised and lined with restaurants, bars and shops. From a central hotel you walk to everything. That changes the maths on all-inclusive: with a hundred restaurants on your doorstep, paying up front usually costs more and you'll eat in to justify it. Playacar, the gated resort quarter at the southern end, is the exception — it's beachfront, quiet and self-contained.

Twenty blocks of pedestrianised street a block from the beach. Busy, and the best evening on this coast.
Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote are 30–40 minutes south. Freshwater sinkholes with light shafting down. The thing you can't get elsewhere.
Forty-five minutes by ferry. The best diving in Mexico, and the west coast escapes the seaweed.
Twenty minutes south. Green turtles grazing the seagrass off the beach. Go at eight with a licensed guide.
An hour south. A Maya port on a cliff above the sea. First hour of the day or it's a queue.
A jungle Maya site with cycle paths between the temples. Far quieter than Chichén Itzá and closer.
Central for walking, Playacar for beachfront calm.
Blocks 1–20 near Fifth Avenue. Restaurants, beach clubs and the ferry pier on foot.
The resort quarter at the south end. Big all-inclusives, quiet, beachfront, and a walk or taxi into town.
Beyond block 30. Calmer sand and fewer beach clubs, still walkable to Fifth.
Halfway back to Cancún. A fishing village with a reef offshore. Underrated and cheaper.
November to April, before the seaweed and outside hurricane season.
December to March gives the driest, warmest weather and the highest prices. November and April are close behind and cheaper. May to October is hot and humid with afternoon storms, inside hurricane season, and overlapping the sargassum window. Prices drop sharply and the trade-off is real.
9h 45m to Cancún (CUN), then about an hour south by road. Shared and private transfers both easy.
Mexican peso. Cards widely accepted on Fifth Avenue; markets and colectivos are cash.
Walk. Colectivos — shared minivans — run down the highway to Tulum and Akumal for a few pesos.
Forty-five minutes from the pier in the centre of town, running roughly hourly.

Playa if you want to walk out into a town. Cancún for shorter transfers, bigger resorts and calmer bay water at the north end.
Only in Playacar. In central Playa you're surrounded by good restaurants and half board usually works out cheaper and better.
The tourist areas are busy and generally trouble-free. Normal city sense, avoid quiet streets late at night, and use official taxis.
Cenotes, if you only do one. Cozumel if you dive. Tulum and Cobá for ruins without the Chichén Itzá drive.
