Corralejo dunes
A protected sand-dune national park running to the sea. Walk in from the road and you'll lose everyone within minutes.
Over 150 kilometres of beach, much of it pale sand rather than volcanic black, and empty in a way the other islands aren't. It's also the windiest, which is the trade-off.
Fuerteventura has the finest sand in the archipelago and the fewest people on it.
Corralejo's dunes and the Jandía peninsula in the south are genuinely spectacular — kilometres of pale sand with almost nobody on them. The reason is the wind: Fuerteventura is flatter and closer to Africa than its neighbours, so the trade winds cross it unimpeded. That makes it the best watersports island in Europe and it means afternoons on the beach often involve a windbreak. If you want still air by a pool, Gran Canaria or the south of Tenerife suit better.
Beaches, dunes, and a lot of water.
A protected sand-dune national park running to the sea. Walk in from the road and you'll lose everyone within minutes.
Sotavento and Cofete in the south. Sotavento's lagoon is world-class for kitesurfing; Cofete is wild and not safe to swim.
A fifteen-minute ferry from Corralejo to an uninhabited islet. Permit required and capped daily — we book it with the holiday.
Sotavento hosts World Cup events. Schools everywhere, and the conditions are reliable rather than occasional.
The old capital, inland in the hills. Whitewashed, tiny, and a complete contrast to the coast.
Black sand and sea caves on the west coast, with the oldest exposed rock in the Canaries. Half an hour, and worth the drive.
Two ends of a long thin island, and they feel different.
Dunes on the doorstep, a proper town, restaurants and the Lanzarote ferry. The most to do.
Long sandy beach, calm shallow water, and hotels set back from it. Good with children.
The best beaches and the smartest hotels. Quieter, and further from the airport.
Twenty minutes from the airport, sheltered man-made beach, and the cheapest option.
Warm and dry all year, with wind that peaks in summer.
Winter sits at 21–22°C with sea around 19°C — the same as the other islands. Summer reaches 27–28°C and the trade winds are strongest from June to September, which is why the windsurfing season peaks then. Spring and autumn are the calmest and the best value.
Fuerteventura (FUE), 10 minutes to Caleta de Fuste, 40 to Corralejo, 90 to Morro Jable.
Same as the UK all year.
Euro, at the Canaries' lower VAT rate.
Worth it. The island is long and thin, the best beaches are spread out, and the roads are quiet.
We'll match the resort to how much wind you want, and price the other islands alongside if you're undecided.
It depends what you want. For watersports it's the reason to come. For still afternoons, Costa Calma and Caleta de Fuste are the sheltered choices.
Sotavento in the south for scale and the lagoon, Corralejo's dunes for drama, Costa Calma for calm shallow swimming with children.
Honestly, less than Tenerife or Gran Canaria. Betancuria, the Ajuy caves and Isla de Lobos are the highlights. It's an island for doing very little.
Ten minutes to Caleta de Fuste, forty to Corralejo, and up to ninety to Morro Jable in the far south. Worth knowing with young children.
