Vila Nova de Gaia is across the river, and it's where every famous name actually is.
Porto makes the wine; Gaia stores and ages it. Taylor's, Graham's, Sandeman and the rest are all on the south bank, five minutes over the Dom Luís I bridge — and the upper deck of that bridge is a walkway with the best view in the city. Two or three lodge tours in an afternoon is the standard thing to do, and they're inexpensive. Then the Douro valley an hour upstream is where the grapes come from: terraced vineyards on impossibly steep slopes, best seen from a boat or the train.

April to June and September to October. Porto is wetter than Lisbon — it's the Atlantic north.
Spring and early autumn give mild days and manageable crowds. Summer is warm rather than hot at 25–28°C, and busy. Winter is grey and genuinely wet — Porto gets substantially more rain than the Algarve or Lisbon — but it's cheap, the lodges are warm, and the food is at its best. The Douro harvest is in September.
