If your flight is delayed and the ship leaves, that's your holiday gone — and a standard travel policy may not cover it.
Cruise lines will not wait, and catching up with a ship at the next port is expensive and sometimes impossible. Flying in a day or two ahead removes the risk entirely and gives you a city you'd otherwise only see from a taxi. That's the whole logic of cruise and stay: Barcelona, Venice, Dubai and Miami are all worth two or three nights in their own right, and the land half doubles as insurance against a delayed flight.
