Cancún addresses run by kilometre along the strip, and the two ends are different holidays.
The northern end, around km 3–9, faces Isla Mujeres bay — calm, shallow water, protected from the open sea, and where families do best. The middle, roughly km 9–14, is the party stretch with the clubs. The southern end, km 14–20, has the biggest beaches and the strongest surf, plus the shortest run to the airport. Ask which kilometre before you book, because 'Cancún Hotel Zone' covers all three.
Beaches, a couple of great day trips, and cenotes an hour inland.
Two and a half hours inland. Go at opening or take the late slot — midday is brutal and there is no shade.
Twenty minutes by ferry. Golf carts, a calm west-facing beach, and far less seaweed than the mainland.
Freshwater sinkholes in the limestone, an hour inland. Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote are the accessible ones and unlike anything else.
The public beach with the big Cancún sign, at the southern end. Beautiful, and the surf is stronger than it looks.
Eco-parks with underground rivers, snorkelling and shows. Expensive, and genuinely good with children.
The best Maya museum on the coast, in the Hotel Zone itself, with a ruined site in the grounds. Quiet and air-conditioned.

Widest sand and strongest surf, closest to the airport. Check flag conditions before swimming.
A real Mexican city behind the lagoon. Far better food, a fraction of the prices, and no beach.
November to April is dry season, before the seaweed and outside hurricane season.
December to March is the peak — dry, warm and expensive, with spring break filling March. November and April are nearly as good and cheaper. May to October is hotter and wetter, inside hurricane season peaking in September, and the sargassum window overlaps. If your dates fall then, we'll steer you to Isla Mujeres or Cozumel.

Buses run the length of the strip constantly for a few pesos. Taxis are unmetered — agree the fare first.

Sargassum affects east-facing beaches roughly April to August, and it varies year to year. Isla Mujeres, Holbox and Cozumel's west coast largely avoid it.
Cancún for shorter transfers and bigger resorts. Playa for a town you can walk out into. Playa suits people who don't want to be resort-bound.
The Hotel Zone and the tourist corridor are heavily policed and generally trouble-free. Normal city sense downtown, and don't wander at night.
Yes in the Hotel Zone, where leaving means a taxi. Less so in Playa del Carmen, where restaurants are on the doorstep.
