At low tide the east coast becomes seagrass flats — beautiful, dotted with women farming seaweed, and not swimmable. Paje, Jambiani and Bwejuu all do this. The north coast around Nungwi and Kendwa has almost no tidal range and stays swimmable throughout, which is why it costs more. Neither is wrong; they're different holidays. But arriving at a picture-perfect beach to find the sea half a kilometre away is the single most common Zanzibar surprise, and it's entirely avoidable.

June to October and December to February. Avoid the long rains in April and May.
June to October is the long dry season and the best window, with reliable kitesurfing wind at Paje. December to February is hotter and humid, and busy over Christmas. The long rains in April and May close some hotels entirely and are worth avoiding. The short rains in November are brief and rarely disruptive.
