Iceland is far enough north for the aurora but the weather is the limiting factor — you need a break in the cloud, and Icelandic weather changes hourly. Three nights gives you a fair chance, five a good one. Anyone guaranteeing the lights is selling something they can't deliver. The rest of the year, from May to August, the midnight sun means it never gets properly dark, so aurora hunting is impossible and the landscape is at its most accessible instead.

Most people base in Reykjavík. The south coast rewards moving.
Restaurants, tours and the airport bus. Everything can be done as a day trip, though some are long ones.
Vík and Hella. Better placed for the glacier lagoon and less light pollution for the aurora.
Hotels near Þingvellir and Geysir. Dark skies, hot tubs, and a short run to the sights.

Winter gives you aurora, ice caves and frozen waterfalls, with only four or five hours of daylight in December and roads that close without warning. Summer gives you the midnight sun, every road open and the Ring Road in play, but no darkness and therefore no lights. September, October and March are the compromise — dark enough for aurora, mild enough that most roads are passable.
3 hours to Keflavík (KEF), from several UK airports year-round.
The Flybus reaches Reykjavík in about 45 minutes. Keflavík is 50km from the city.
Icelandic króna, and it's effectively cashless. Cards work everywhere, including public toilets.
Easy in summer, demanding in winter. A 4x4 is worth it December to March, and check road.is before every drive.
