Chiang Mai

Cooler, greener and slower than the south, with three hundred temples inside a moat and a food culture that outclasses Bangkok. The leg people add reluctantly and then talk about most.

Avoid March and April entirely

Burning season is a genuine health issue, not an inconvenience, and it's the one thing that should move your dates.

Farmers clear fields across northern Thailand in late February through April, and the smoke sits in the valley. Air quality readings regularly reach levels where outdoor activity is inadvisable, and the mountains you came for disappear into haze for weeks. November to February is the window: cool evenings, clear skies, and the Yi Peng lantern festival in November if the dates fall right. We move people's itineraries rather than send them into it.

What to do

A walled old city, hills behind it, and the best cooking classes in Thailand.

Forested mountains

Doi Suthep

A gold temple on the mountain above the city, up 306 naga steps. Go at sunrise, before the coaches and the heat.

A quiet tropical setting

An elephant sanctuary

Observation only — no riding, no bathing shows. We book places that meet that standard and tell you why we chose them.

A Thai river scene

A cooking class

Market visit, then four or five dishes on a working farm. The best value day in Thailand and everyone comes home cooking.

Limestone cliffs

The old city temples

Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh inside the moat. Free or a token fee, and walkable in an afternoon.

Karst landscape

Sunday walking street

Ratchadamnoen closes to traffic and fills with craft stalls and food. The best evening of the week here.

A quiet cove

Doi Inthanon

Thailand's highest peak, two hours out. Waterfalls, twin pagodas and genuinely cold air at the summit.

Where to stay

Small city. Inside the moat or just outside it covers everything.

Old City

First visit

Inside the moat, temples on every corner, and walkable to everything. Our usual pick.

Nimmanhaemin

Cafés & modern

West of the old city. Coffee shops, design stores and a younger crowd.

Riverside

Quiet & smart

Along the Ping. Colonial-era hotels, calmer evenings, a short ride into town.

Mae Rim & the hills

Resorts & nature

Twenty to forty minutes north. Jungle resorts and sanctuaries, and you'll need transport.

Five things worth knowing

When to go

November to February is cool, clear and the only window we'd recommend without caveats.

Nights drop to 15°C in December and January, which is a relief after the coast. March and April bring heat and the burning season. May to October is the rainy season — green, quiet and cheap, with heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain, and the air is at its cleanest.

Practical

Getting there

1h 15m by air from Bangkok, or an overnight sleeper train which is an experience in itself.

Getting around

Songthaews are cheap and everywhere. The old city is walkable; Grab works for the rest.

Currency

Thai baht. Markets and songthaews are cash.

What to pack

A jumper for December and January evenings, which genuinely get cold at altitude.

Tell us your dates

We'll build it into a Thailand itinerary, book an ethical sanctuary and a cooking class, and write the payment plan out in full.

Questions people ask

How many nights?

Three or four. It's the leg people underbook and then wish they'd extended.

Which elephant sanctuary?

One that's observation-only. We'll name the ones we book and explain what makes them different from the rest.

Is it worth it if we only have ten days?

Yes — it's an hour's flight and completely different from the beaches. City, mountains, beach is the classic Thai shape for a reason.

When exactly is burning season?

Roughly late February to late April, worst in March. We'd move your dates rather than send you then.
