The sargassum that lands on Cancún, Playa and Tulum between April and August is carried by currents onto east-facing beaches. Cozumel's west coast faces away from it, and while the exposed eastern side does get seaweed, almost nobody stays or swims there. That makes the island the reliable answer for anyone travelling in the affected months — and the diving on the Palancar and Santa Rosa walls is world-class regardless of season.

November to April is best, but Cozumel is the island that also works in the seaweed months.
December to March gives the calmest crossings and best visibility for diving. May to October is hotter and inside hurricane season, but the west coast stays largely clear of sargassum when the mainland doesn't — which is precisely when we recommend it. Visibility on the reefs is good year-round.
Forty-five minutes by ferry from Playa del Carmen, roughly hourly. Cozumel also has its own airport with connections via Mexico City.
Scooter, hire car or taxi. One road runs down the west coast and around the southern tip.
Mexican peso. Cards in dive shops and hotels; beach clubs and taxis prefer cash.

Very. It's drift diving in warm clear water, and one of the better places in the world to qualify. Snorkelling at El Cielo needs no experience.
