Most trips put the city first and the beach last. Japan reverses it: you'll walk fifteen kilometres a day, navigate a rail network in a script you can't read, and get up at six for the temples. Putting Singapore or Hong Kong at the *end* gives you somewhere effortless to decompress and splits the long flight home. It also means arriving in Japan fresh, which matters more than arriving home fresh from anywhere else.
