Four hours from the UK, and about as different as four hours gets. A walled medina of souks and courtyards, snow-capped mountains an hour away, and winter sun at 20°C.
A riad is a traditional courtyard house inside the medina. A resort is in the Palmeraie, twenty minutes out.
Riads are small — often six or eight rooms round a central courtyard with a plunge pool — and they put you inside the old city, where the souks and the food are. Cars can't reach most of them, so you'll walk the last stretch with your bags. Resorts in the Palmeraie and Hivernage have space, pools and quiet, and you'll taxi in for everything. For three nights we'd almost always say riad; for a week with children, the resorts make more sense.
A medina, gardens, and mountains within an hour.
The main square. Orange juice and snake charmers by day, food stalls and crowds after dark. Go at dusk from a rooftop café first.
North of the square, and genuinely a maze. Haggling is expected and good-natured. Agree a price before anyone starts wrapping.
Yves Saint Laurent's cobalt-blue garden, and the Berber Museum inside it. Book a timed ticket — it sells out daily.
An hour to the Ourika valley or Imlil. Waterfalls, Berber villages and air twenty degrees cooler. The best day out.
Nineteenth-century courtyards and sixteenth-century tombs sealed for two hundred years. Both quiet compared with the square.
Public ones are cheap and communal; riad hammams are private and gentle. Either way it's the thing to do on your last afternoon.

March to May and September to November. Summer is punishing and winter is mild.
Spring and autumn give 24–28°C and comfortable walking. July and August reach 40°C-plus — the medina becomes very hard work. Winter is 18–20°C by day and genuinely cold at night, sometimes near freezing, since Marrakech sits at 450m with the Atlas behind it. Riads have fires for a reason.

Moroccan dirham, and it's a closed currency — you can't buy it before you go. Change on arrival or use ATMs.

Yes — Essaouira is two and a half hours by road, breezy and cooler, and Agadir is further south. Both work as a beach half.
