Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka
Ancient rock forts, tea country you cross by train, and a south coast that empties out by four. Small enough to see properly in a fortnight, varied enough that it feels like three separate holidays.
The short version
The month decides the route
Sri Lanka has two monsoons hitting opposite coasts at opposite times. December to March, the south and west are perfect and the east is wet. May to September it reverses. Nobody books Sri Lanka badly on purpose — they book it without knowing this, and end up on the wrong coast.

The middle
Tea country, and the train through it
The hill country around Nuwara Eliya and Ella is cool, green and 1,900 metres up — a genuine relief after the coast. The train from Kandy to Ella is the reason most people come, and it's worth reserving a seat rather than gambling on the day. Six hours, and the last two are the best rail journey in Asia.

Don't rush it
Two weeks, not one
A week only gets you the coast or the culture, not both. Fourteen nights lets you do the cultural triangle, the hill country and the south properly, with a driver rather than three internal transfers. Ten is the absolute minimum we'd recommend, and we'd cut the culture rather than the beach.
The three parts
Culture, hills, coast

Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa. Two nights covers it. Climb Sigiriya at opening or not at all.

Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella. Cool, green and the best train ride you'll take. Three nights.

Mirissa, Weligama, Tangalle. Whales in season, surf year-round, and beaches that empty by late afternoon.

The Dutch fort, walls you can walk at sunset, and the best hotels on the island. Two nights at the end.
When to go
Two monsoons, two coasts
This is the single thing to get right. The south-west coast — Galle, Mirissa, Bentota — is dry from December to March. The east coast is dry from May to September. The hill country works nearly all year but is wettest in October and November.
South & west coast · Galle, Mirissa, Bentota
East coast · Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, Passikudah
Navy marks peak pricing, pale blue good conditions, grey the monsoon. If your dates are fixed in July, we'd send you east rather than talk you out of the trip.

Before you book
Three things worth knowing
Take a driver, not a hire car. A car with a driver costs less than you'd expect and removes the single worst part of Sri Lanka. Roads are slow, signage is poor, and distances that look short take four hours.
You need an ETA before you fly. Sri Lanka requires an electronic travel authorisation, applied for online in advance. The rules and fees have changed more than once recently — we'll send you the current link with your documents.
Book the Ella train early. Reserved seats on the Kandy–Ella line sell out well ahead. Unreserved means standing in a doorway for six hours, which some people love and most do not.
Next step
Give us your dates and we'll pick the coast
Tell us when you can travel and we'll build the route that suits the month, with a driver, the train reserved, and the payment plan written out in full.
Practical
Sri Lankan rupee. Cash for the hill country and small towns; cards work in Colombo and the resorts.
ETA applied for online in advance. Straightforward, but do it before you fly.
Drives on the left. A car and driver is the normal way to do the circuit and costs less than you'd expect.
