The Petronas Towers lit at dusk above the Kuala Lumpur skyline

Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur

The cheapest good city in Asia, and the natural break on the way to Bali or Australia. Two nights is plenty. Three if you like eating, which you should.

The short version

Do it instead of Singapore, or as well

Kuala Lumpur does most of what Singapore does at roughly half the price — the towers, the food, the temples, the transit. It's scruffier and more interesting for it. If you're routing through Asia anyway, two nights here costs less than one in Singapore and you'll eat better.

The centre

The Towers, and the park underneath

Everyone photographs the Petronas Towers from the park at KLCC, and they're right to — the reflecting pool at the base is the shot. The Skybridge tickets sell out days ahead online, so book before you fly. If you'd rather see the towers than stand in them, the KL Tower opposite gives you the better view.

Half an hour out

Thean Hou, and the temple trail

A six-tiered Chinese temple on a hill south of the centre, hung with hundreds of red lanterns and almost empty on a weekday. Pair it with Batu Caves to the north — 272 painted steps, a 42-metre gold statue and a great many monkeys — and you have a full day for the price of two taxis.

When to go

It rains all year, and it doesn't matter

Kuala Lumpur is 32°C and humid every month. Rain comes as a heavy late-afternoon hour rather than a washed-out day, and it's rarely a reason to change your dates. The wetter months are simply cheaper.

May to August is the driest run. Ramadan and Chinese New Year both shift the city's rhythm and its prices — we'll flag it if your dates fall across either.

Before you book

Three things worth knowing

It is very cheap. A good hotel costs half what it does in Singapore and a third of Dubai. This is the destination where upgrading to a five-star actually makes sense on the numbers.

The airport is a long way out. KLIA is around an hour from the centre. The express train takes 28 minutes and is worth it — a taxi in the evening rush can take twice that.

It's a natural pairing. KL sits on the route to Bali, Australia and New Zealand, and adding two nights usually costs less than the fare difference. Ask us to price both versions.

Next step

Tell us where you're heading and we'll build it in

Kuala Lumpur is almost always cheaper as part of a longer route than as a trip on its own. Send your dates and we'll price both and show you the difference.

Your money is protected. Trip Tides is a travel agent — we book your holiday with a travel company, and that company is named on your quote and confirmation. Your contract is with them. If your holiday is a package including flights, put together by an ATOL holder, you'll get an ATOL certificate naming that company. We confirm in writing what protection applies before you pay.

Practical

Currency

Malaysian ringgit. Cards are fine in KL; cash for hawker centres and night markets.

Visa

No visa required for UK passports for short stays.

Getting around

Drives on the left. The KLIA Ekspres reaches the city in 28 minutes — far quicker than the road.

Time zone

7 hours ahead of the UK.

Kuala Lumpur packages
