Four nights, not three

The time difference works in your favour outbound and against you on the way home.

A morning flight lands early afternoon New York time, so day one is a real half-day. Three nights gives you three full days and feels rushed; four gives you the museums, a neighbourhood beyond Midtown, and an evening that isn't scheduled. Coming home you lose a night to the overnight flight. The other thing to settle before you fly: the observation decks and any Broadway show sell out, and buying on the day costs considerably more where it's possible at all.

What to do

Skyline, park, museums, and a neighbourhood that isn't Times Square.

A city skyline

An observation deck

Top of the Rock looks at the Empire State; the Empire State doesn't. Summit and Edge are the newer ones. Book a sunset slot weeks ahead.

An aerial city view

Central Park

Bigger than Monaco. Walk the Ramble and Bethesda Terrace, or hire a bike. Free, and the best hours in the city.

Palm trees at sunset

The Met or MoMA

Two of the world's great museums. The Met is vast — pick two wings. MoMA is smaller and easier in an afternoon.

Boats on the water

Staten Island Ferry

Free, every thirty minutes, and it passes the Statue of Liberty. Better value than any harbour cruise.

A palm against blue sky

Brooklyn & the bridge

Walk the bridge into DUMBO, then Williamsburg for the evening. Where New Yorkers actually go.

Trees and water

9/11 Memorial & Museum

The pools in the tower footprints, and a museum beneath. Difficult, and among the best-made museums anywhere. Book ahead.

Where to stay

Manhattan is long. Where you sleep decides how much of it you walk.

Midtown

First visit

Times Square, the decks and the theatres. Convenient, expensive, and not where anyone lives.

Lower East Side & SoHo

Character & food

Downtown, walkable, and far better restaurants. Good subway links uptown.

Upper West Side

Calm & local

Beside Central Park and the Museum of Natural History. Residential and quieter, twenty minutes from Midtown.

Brooklyn

Value & view

Williamsburg or DUMBO. Cheaper hotels, the skyline from across the water, and a subway ride in.

Five things worth knowing

When to go

April to June and September to November are the best. Summer is humid and winter is bitter.

Spring and autumn give comfortable walking weather and the parks at their best — autumn colour in Central Park is worth timing. July and August are hot and very humid. Winter drops below freezing with wind that makes it feel worse, though December has the Christmas markets, the Rockefeller tree and the ice rinks, which is why a lot of people go anyway.

Practical

Flights

7h 30m direct to JFK or Newark, from most UK airports.

From the airport

AirTrain plus subway from JFK is cheapest; a taxi is a flat fare to Manhattan. Newark is often quicker to midtown.

ESTA

Required, applied for online at least 72 hours ahead. Use the official government site — copycats charge four times as much.

Getting around

Subway and walking. Contactless tap-in caps your daily fare automatically.

Tell us your dates

We'll book the decks and any shows, pair it with Orlando or Vegas, and write the payment plan out in full.

Questions people ask

How many nights?

Four. Three is possible and rushed; five if you want Brooklyn and a second museum without hurrying.

Which observation deck?

Top of the Rock for the view including the Empire State. Summit for the newest and most theatrical. Book a sunset slot early.

Is a New York Pass worth it?

Only if you'll do four or more paid attractions in a few days. Most four-night visitors do better booking the two or three they actually want.

Can we combine it with somewhere?

Orlando is the classic family pairing, Las Vegas the other one. Both are internal flights and we'll price them together.
