Maya ruins on a cliff above the sea, a beach road of low-rise cabanas under palms, and a town two miles inland that costs a third as much. Wonderful, and genuinely not for everyone.
It's off-grid by design, and that has practical consequences people aren't warned about.
Many hotels on the Tulum beach road run on generators, with limited or no air conditioning, intermittent hot water, and patchy wifi. That's part of the appeal — low-rise, candlelit, no high-rises — and it's a shock if you booked expecting a Cancún resort at a Cancún price, because it costs considerably more. Tulum pueblo, two miles inland, has mains power, proper hotels, better restaurants and a third of the prices, with a taxi to the beach. Know which one you're booking.
Ruins, cenotes and a biosphere reserve, all within half an hour.
The only Maya city built on the coast, on a cliff above a swimmable beach. Go in the first hour — by ten it's a queue.
Ten and twenty minutes north. The clearest freshwater you'll ever swim in. Go before eleven.
A UNESCO biosphere south of town. Float down a natural Maya canal on the current — the best half-day on this coast.
Forty-five minutes inland. A jungle Maya site with cycle paths between temples, and far quieter than Chichén Itzá.
Flat, and quicker than a taxi in the evening jam. Most hotels lend bikes; the road is dark at night, so take a light.
A lagoon with a deep blue cenote in the middle, ten minutes from town. Shallow, warm and far less busy than the coast.
Two Tulums, two miles apart, at very different prices.
Closer to town and the ruins, with more shops and cafés. Busier and slightly cheaper than the south.
Towards Sian Ka'an. The famous hotels, the most seclusion, and the most likely to be off-grid.
Two miles inland. Mains power, air conditioning, better restaurants, a third of the price, and a taxi to the sand.
Between town and beach. Modern condos and hotels, quiet, with a short ride either way.
November to April, and more strictly here because of the seaweed.
December to March is dry, warm and at its busiest and most expensive. November and April are quieter. May to October brings heat, afternoon storms, hurricane season and the worst of the sargassum — Tulum's east-facing beaches are among the most affected on the coast, and it's worth planning around rather than hoping.
9h 45m to Cancún (CUN) then 90 minutes south, or into Tulum (TQO) which is much closer.
Mexican peso. Beach-zone hotels take cards; town and colectivos want cash, and ATMs on the beach road charge heavily.
Bicycle on the beach road, colectivos up the highway. Taxis are unmetered — agree the fare.

It's remarkable, and it's expensive and rustic in a way people don't expect. Booked with clear eyes it's wonderful; booked expecting a resort it disappoints.
Beach for the setting, town for value and reliability. A lot of people split it — a few nights each.
Some do, many don't, and some run it only at night on a generator. Always ask, and we confirm it in writing before you book.
April to August, and Tulum gets it badly. If your dates fall then, we'd suggest Isla Mujeres or Cozumel instead.
