The Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen all open free at the end of the day, and hardly anyone plans around it.
The Prado is free for the last two hours, the Reina Sofía for the last two on most evenings, and the Thyssen has a free window too. That's Velázquez, Goya, Bosch and Picasso's Guernica for nothing, at the quietest time of day. It does mean queuing, and it's not the moment to see everything — but for a three-night break, one paid morning at the Prado and free evenings elsewhere covers it. Check current times before you go; they change.
Art, a park, and eating late.
Velázquez's Las Meninas, Goya's black paintings, and Bosch. Vast — pick two rooms and do them properly. Free for the last two hours.
Guernica, in a room of its own. Twentieth-century Spanish art in a converted hospital. Free most evenings.
A royal park with a boating lake and a glass palace. Free, huge, and where Madrid goes on a Sunday.
A glass-and-iron market of tapas counters near Plaza Mayor. Touristy and genuinely good — go at opening or after nine.
Thirty minutes by fast train. A walled city of Christian, Jewish and Moorish quarters on a rock above a river gorge.
Thirty minutes the other way. A Roman aqueduct with no mortar, standing since the first century, and a fairytale alcázar.
Compact centre, and the neighbourhoods differ sharply after dark.
Dead centre, walkable to everything. Busy, and noisy at night.
Between Sol and the Prado. Tapas bars, small hotels, and the best eating within walking distance.
North of the centre. Independent shops, late bars, and where Madrid actually goes out.
Elegant grid east of the Retiro. Quieter, more expensive, and a short metro ride in.
April to June and September to October. Summer is hot and winter is cold — Madrid is inland and high.
Spring and autumn give 20–26°C and comfortable walking. July and August reach 35°C-plus with no coastal breeze; the city empties and some places close. Winter is genuinely cold — Madrid sits at 650m and can drop below freezing — but it's cheap, the museums are empty, and the Christmas lights are good.
2h 30m to Madrid (MAD), year-round from most UK airports.
Metro line 8 or the Cercanías train to Atocha. Both quick and cheap; taxis are a fixed fare to the centre.
Euro. Cards everywhere, including small bars.
Fast trains to Toledo and Segovia take about 30 minutes each. Book ahead for the cheaper fares.

Seville is two and a half hours by high-speed train, Barcelona the same. Open-jaw flights usually cost the same as a return.
