Marrakech is intense and hot. Essaouira is neither, and it's two and a half hours away.
Four nights in a riad is about right — the souks, the gardens and the food are extraordinary and the medina is tiring. Then a night in the Atlas, where it's fifteen degrees cooler and utterly quiet. Then the Atlantic at Essaouira, a walled fishing port with a permanent breeze that keeps it in the low twenties when Marrakech is at 38°C. It's the same country and it feels like a different holiday, which is exactly what the second half of a trip should do.

Riads vary enormously — a beautiful one with a plunge pool costs little more than a bland hotel. The mountain leg is where a modest upgrade shows most: the difference between a basic guesthouse and a proper kasbah lodge is significant and not expensive.
March to May and September to November. Summer is genuinely too hot in Marrakech.
Spring and autumn give 24–28°C in the city and comfortable walking in the mountains. July and August pass 40°C in Marrakech, which makes the medina very hard work — though Essaouira stays in the low twenties year-round thanks to the Atlantic wind. Winter is mild by day at 18–20°C and genuinely cold at night; riads have fires for a reason, and the Atlas gets snow.
