Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló all sell out, and turning up on the day rarely works.
The Sagrada Família in particular can be booked out a fortnight ahead in season, and the tower lifts go first. Park Güell caps numbers in the monumental zone by half-hour slot. This is the single practical thing that determines whether a Barcelona trip works — people book flights, arrive, and find the thing they came for is unavailable. Book the entries first, then everything else around them.
Gaudí is the reason most people come, but the Gothic Quarter and the food are what they talk about afterwards.

Gaudí's mosaic terrace above the city. The monumental zone is ticketed by half-hour slot; the surrounding park is free.
Roman walls, medieval lanes and the cathedral cloister with its thirteen geese. Best early, before the tour groups.
La Boqueria off the Ramblas. Go before ten and eat at a counter at the back where the market workers eat.
Cable car up, the Miró Foundation, the castle and the view. A half-day and far quieter than the centre.
Twenty minutes uphill from the centre. Village squares, local bars, and prices from a different city.
Barcelona's barris are strongly distinct. Where you sleep changes the noise level more than anything else.
Gaudí's grid of octagonal blocks. Central, elegant, quiet at night, and walkable to the Sagrada Família.
Medieval and right in the middle. Wonderful by day, loud until late at weekends.
Uphill, village-like squares, excellent food and real prices. Twenty minutes from the centre.
The old fishing quarter by the sand. Good for a beach break, less good for everything else.
May, June, September and October are the best. July and August are hot, crowded and expensive; winter is mild and very good value.
Summer brings 30°C-plus, cruise crowds and peak hotel rates, and August sees many local restaurants close. Spring and early autumn give you warm weather, swimmable sea in September and October, and manageable queues. Winter sits around 14–16°C — too cool for the beach but excellent for the architecture and the food, at half the price.
2h 10m to El Prat (BCN), from almost every UK airport.
The Aerobús runs to Plaça Catalunya in 35 minutes; the R2 Nord train is cheaper and similar.
Euro. Cards are accepted everywhere, including small bars.
Metro is fast and cheap; a T-casual ten-journey ticket is far better value than singles. Much of the centre is walkable.

Gràcia, Sant Antoni or the upper Gothic Quarter. Anywhere on the Ramblas or with pictures of paella outside is best avoided.
