Seville is regularly the hottest city in Europe, and July and August routinely pass 40°C.
That isn't sightseeing weather — it's stay-indoors-until-eight weather, and much of the city does exactly that. The flip side is that Seville has a superb winter: 17–19°C in January, blue skies and half the price. March to May is the best window of all, though be aware that Semana Santa and the Feria de Abril fall in that stretch and both transform the city, fill every hotel and triple the rates. Wonderful if you've come for them; a shock if you haven't.

The largest Gothic cathedral in the world, with Columbus's tomb and a minaret turned bell tower. Ramps, not stairs, to the top.
Skip the dinner-and-show packages. Casa de la Memoria or a peña gives you a small room, no microphones and the real thing.
The old Jewish quarter — whitewashed lanes barely wide enough for two, orange trees and hidden courtyards.
Seville invented them. Stand at the bar, order two or three, move on. Triana across the river is where locals go.
A vast semicircle built for the 1929 expo, with tiled alcoves for every Spanish province. Free, and best in late afternoon light.
The centre is compact and largely pedestrian. Stay inside it or just across the river.
The old quarter beside the Alcázar. Atmospheric, central, and the lanes are too narrow for cars.
Between the cathedral and the river. Bullring, tapas bars, and slightly quieter at night.
Across the river. Ceramics, markets, the best tapas and real flamenco heritage. Ten minutes' walk in.
North of the centre. Bars, students, and the best value beds in the city.
March to May and October to November are ideal. Winter is mild and cheap; summer is best avoided entirely.
Spring gives orange blossom, warm days and the two great festivals. Autumn is quieter and just as pleasant. Winter sits in the high teens with occasional rain and the lowest prices of the year. Summer is the one to plan around — the heat is a genuine limiting factor rather than an inconvenience.
2h 45m to Seville (SVQ). Also reachable via Málaga, two hours by fast train.
The EA airport bus runs to the centre in about 35 minutes.
Euro. Cards everywhere, though small tapas bars sometimes prefer cash.
Walk — the centre is small and largely pedestrianised. One tram line and plenty of bike hire.

Three. Four if you want Córdoba or Granada as a day trip — both are under two hours by train.
Different. The Alhambra in Granada is bigger and more dramatic; the Alcázar is more intimate and easier to reach. Do both if you can.
