Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are an hour apart and people assume one will do. They're wrong in an interesting way.
Singapore is orderly, expensive, spotless and works like clockwork — the softest possible landing after a thirteen-hour flight. Kuala Lumpur is messier, cheaper, louder and more obviously South-East Asian, with better street food and a fraction of the prices. Doing both gives you the contrast, and because KL is so much cheaper it actually reduces the average cost of the trip. Then Bali is the third act, and nothing like either.

1Arrive, reset the body clock, and eat extremely well for very little.
Where you stay: Chinatown or Kampong Glam for character and value; Marina Bay for the icon.
Getting there: 13 hours direct from the UK, landing afternoon or evening.
2An hour's flight and a completely different price bracket. Louder, cheaper, and better street food.
Where you stay: Bukit Bintang to walk to restaurants, or KLCC for the towers.

3Split the island rather than sitting in one resort — it's what makes a Bali trip memorable rather than pleasant.

Singapore is the expensive leg and Bali the cheapest — a private-pool villa in Ubud often costs less than a mid-range Singapore hotel room. If the budget is tight, trim Singapore to two nights rather than downgrading Bali.
Bali's dry season runs April to October, and both cities are hot and humid all year with short sharp rain.
May, June and September are the sweet spots — Bali is dry, crowds are lighter than July and August, and prices sit below peak. November to March is Bali's wet season: it doesn't rain all day, but it rains hard most days and the southern sea can be murky. Neither city has a bad month, though Ramadan shifts KL's rhythm and we'll flag it against your dates.

No, but the contrast is the point and KL is cheap enough that it barely adds to the total. If you'd rather, drop KL and add three nights to Bali.
We'd strongly recommend it. Ubud and the south coast are ninety minutes and a world apart.
